I’ve been engaging in small group discourse with my Math
students for 6 years. I figured I “knew
a thing or two because I’d seen a thing or two,” to quote Farmers Insurance
commercials. So when I recently attended
a professional development course on Engaging in Discourse in Small Group
Instruction, I figured I’d learn little but be able to share a lot.

The PD I went to was taught at Region 17 Education Service
Center by Carol Julian (she’s awesome and if I ever get the chance to attend anything else she
teaches, I will be first in line). One
of the resources she based her instruction on is called, “Making Sense of
Mathematics for Teaching the Small Group” by Juli K. Dixon, Lisa A. Brooks, and
Melissa R. Carli. Here is a picture of
the cover:

I loved the book. It
will be a resource I will use again and again.

A feature I love! Is that there are video examples sprinkled
throughout the text that show Juli Dixon with students demonstrating the ideas
she discusses. The video examples are
accessible by QR code so are easy to access with any device with a QR code
reader.

One of the most PROFOUND things I noticed when accessing the
video is the use of wait time.

I know, I know.
You’re thinking the idea of wait time has been around for a long
time.

I give wait time when I ask a question. BUT, I suddenly realized I was using it
incorrectly.

Let me explain.

Ms. Dixon reads a word problem (or a student does). Then she gives her students time to solve it
without saying a word.

WHAT!?

If a student isn’t circling important
numbers, underlining the question and solving immediately, I swoop in with my
cape on and rescue them with scaffolding and guiding questions. Then, at the end of the year, in frustration,
I say, “These students wait for me to tell them what to do before they’ll even
try.” Why? Because that’s what I’ve taught them.

By giving students the opportunity to make
sense of the problem themselves, I am giving them the opportunity to decode the
problem, try their own solution that makes sense to them, and gain confidence
in their problem solving strategies.

A companion practice is to follow up answers with clarifying
questions but not to say “Yes, that’s right,” or “No, that’s wrong.” Those statements bring discussion to an
abrupt stop! If they are right, I can
guide the discourse into enrichment. If
wrong, I can guide with questions like, “How do you know…” or “Tell me what
you’re thinking…” to lead the student to make the discovery on their own (a
discovery that will most likely stay with them much longer than if I tell the
answer).

All told, I can’t say enough great things about this
book. I’ve only shown you the tip of the
iceburg. In this book, Dixon discusses:

<span style="font-family: "symbol";"> Purpose of small group learning

<span style="font-family: "symbol";"> The correct use of guiding questions

<span style="font-family: "symbol";"> All about TQE and how to use it to successfully plan and implement small-group tasks

<span style="font-family: "symbol";"> All about how to engage students in productive
discourse

She also gives best practices for small group discourse and
discusses the TQE process for delivering lessons. It’s a small book, 74 pages and it’s
published by Solution Tree. But it’s
SUPER Powerful.

P.S. I bought mine
from Amazon.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Simplifying fractions is challenging for students, requiring a process where errors are easy to make. The process is also difficult conceptually causing students lots of questions. Here are the questions I hear:
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

What is "simplifying a fraction"?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Simplifying a fraction is finding its smallest equivalent fraction.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

Why do I have to do it?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">It's easier to work with smallest equivalent fractions.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

How do I do it?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Divide the numerator and denominator by the <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 24px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">Greatest Common Factor or "GCF".
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

An Organized Approach

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I created a Simplifying Fractions Mat. The Mat gives students a place to complete T-charts on the numerator and denominator then identify the Greatest Common Factor "GCF". Once identified, students divide by the GCF to find a simplified fraction.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

How do I know when I'm done?

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Simplification is complete when the simplified fraction follows at least one of these 4 rules:
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">1. Prime is Slime: When the numerator and denominator are both prime numbers.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">2. Back to Back Jack: When the numerator and denominator are back to back on a number line.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">3. One and Done: The numerator of the simplified fraction is 1.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">4. The "No-Rule" Rule: Sometimes the simplified fraction doesn't follow a rule (i.e. 2/15). If this is the rule that the simplified fraction follows, make sure all factor pairs have been recorded in the T-charts and the numerator and denominator have been divided by the GCF.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Simplifying fractions, though very necessary, can be challenging. I hope the FREE Simplifying Fractions Mat simplifies the process for you and your students.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">What method(s) do your students use to simplify fraction?
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">"Every time you send a credit card number over the Internet, it gets encrypted by your browser, and the encryption algorithm is based on the theory of prime numbers. At some point, electronic money will become as common as paper money, and -that- will also be based on the theory of prime numbers. And, what's used more in the real world than money?"

Conceptual Way to Introduce Prime and Composite Numbers

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Donna Boucher, Math Coach at Math Coach's Corner, asks her students to identify all arrays of a specific number (i.e. 24). They are then tasked with creating a poster showing the array, t-chart and organized factor list for each factor pair the class identified. She hangs the posters around the room and students reflect. What do you notice? They may notice some numbers have more factors than others. Cue vocabulary!
In Mrs. Curry's 5th grade Math class, the emphasis is on strategies. Every solution starts with a strategy and every word problem is solved using a problem-solving strategy called BUCKS.

We have adapted it as we need, such as adding a strategy box under the “S” so that they know exactly what they’re planning to use to solve. This way, if they have to revisit the problem, they know what they did & why."

What Makes BUCKS Successful?

Having a strong Problem-Solving Strategy is key to problem-solving success IF students use it.

Mrs. Curry introduced BUCKS early and students already know and understand the acronym and use it for their problem-solving. Mrs. Curry explained to students early on that using BUCKS is her minimum expectation in their problem solving and she enforces it. She tells her students that she will provide to them the strategies that work and will help them to be successful. The students' part in the success equation is to use them.

Mrs. Curry has students write the initials, BUCKS on their papers and cross off each initial as they do it.

Bottom line, with a strong problem-solving strategy, consistency will produce successful results.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does your school use BUCKS or something else? If you use a different problem-solving strategy, and it produces successful results, please share it and tell why it's successful so this blog's readership can learn more about problem-solving strategies.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I hope these 5 ideas help you to save money during this Back-to-School season! Where do you like to go to shop for school supplies? How do you save school supply dollars? Feel free to comment. I'd love to hear your ideas.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">An Unexpected Finding

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I used these 5 ideas when shopping for my granddaughter's school supplies and achieved 50% savings over what I would've have spent! But that fact didn't surprise as much as the following:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">When my granddaughter dropped by my house later, I suggested we inventory the purchased supplies to make sure nothing was forgotten. So, armed with the list, my "soon-to-be a big 4th grader" granddaughter began checking off what I purchased against her school supply list.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Soon she said, "we need more glue sticks BB."
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"How many do we have?" I asked.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"None,"
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"Show me," I said. The list required 4 2-ct packs of glue sticks. After looking through the sacks, I found the package of glue sticks - normally a pack of 6 glue sticks but this package awarded 2 free glue sticks for a total of 8. We had a lively discussion about how 4 2-ct packs of glue sticks is the same as 1 8-ct pack of glue sticks. (For some reason, my granddaughter doesn't just take my word for it, insisting on understanding in order to agree but I wouldn't have it any other way).
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The most exciting part of our inventory was when we got to the pencils.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The list required 96 pencils. I had purchased 7 packs of 15. My granddaughter calculated how many groups of 15 we would need to make a total of 96 When she had counted 6 packs, she reported that she had 90 pencils.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"Is 90 enough?" I asked her.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"No, I need 96," she said.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"What should we do?"
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"If I add another 15, it will be more than 96".
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"How much will it be?'
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"105."
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"So do we add another package? or do we take 6 packages that make a total of 90?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">She thought about this for awhile, and finally decided she would take the additional package of 15 and as a result will be taking more than she needs but if it was a question of taking more or not enough, she wanted to take more.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Inventorying her school supplies was an authentic experience for my granddaughter and gave her the opportunity to experience performing the math that you need to live rather than math used to reinforce or remediate a concept.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In my humble opinion, the best math is math you do to live - measuring, converting, counting, evaluating, analyzing, quantifying. It's a mathematical world. Our math skills are our path to success. This experience inspired me to think about the math I do daily and invite my granddaughter to help me do the math necessary to live in the world successfully so she can make connections between what she is doing in school and what she is doing or will need to do in her life.
rather live near a volcano or on a fault line? Or “How was reconstruction of the South after
the Civil War successful? Where did it
fail?).

3. Predict the impact on an ecosystem in the case
of an overabundance of a species. (i.e. There’s drought on the prairie. What happens to the rabbits? Coyotes? Other species?)

4. Record a “Reading Selfie” - Read and record a passage from your library book. Continue recording
making connections "Text to Text", "Text to Self", "Text to World".

5. Explain why
we CAN'T excuse Dear Aunt Sally or Give My Dad A Sandwich! What is the REAL order of Operations?!

6. Poll classmates,
create a graph then share data analysis via Flipgrid.

7. Reflect on upcoming state testing by venting their feelings, concerns,
where they feel confident and what they would like to review

8. Practice
presentations for a Biographical Wax museum or Science Fair. Classmates offer a “glow” (what they enjoyed) and a “grow” (“Have you thought about...?") to offer constructive feedback.
Or, record a message to parents for an Open House or Student Showcase.

9. Record
book review or commercial to recommend
interesting reads for peers

10. Forecast the weather as a meteorologist. What’s the difference between climate and weather? What do the symbols on a weather map
mean? After studying local weather
conditions, assign students to give today’s forecast as a meteorologist on
Flipgrid.

11. Be the Teacher! Record a "HOW TO" on how to change a decimal
into a fraction or how to edit a sentence or solve the problem of the day.

12. Welcome incoming students at the beginning of
the school year. At the end of the year,
current students record a Flipgrid to advise incoming students on what they
loved about their grade and how to be successful in the upcoming year.

13. Report on a research Project.

14. Practice speaking English. For dual-language students, Flipgrid can be

WRITE THE BLOG ENTRY YOU WANT TO READ

What have I been reading?

The most awesome blog entries I have been reading lately are written by Vicki Davis who writes the Cool Cat Teacher Blog

Ms. Davis has been teaching high school for 15 years, teaching teachers how to use technology in the classroom for 20 years, blogging since 2005 and recording podcasts since 2013. She’s earned numerous awards which you can read about on the bio written on her home page.

I take away rich, valuable, resources that I can apply from almost every share.

80 Days of Excellence

Ms. Davis is now writing a series of blogposts called, “80 Days of Excellence” which began January 1, 2018. She has committed to learning and sharing about excellence each day, in some way. Even though it’s now January 7th, these entries are timeless and can be easily accessed on Cool Cat Teacher Blog

What I am enjoying most about these posts is that Ms. Davis shares herself. Her posts are rich and universal, in their truth and easily applied. I find myself reflecting on her shares and trying different ways to increase excellence in my own life.

I could go on and on…

I hope you’ll visit Cool Cat Teacher Blog

No matter what you teach, or even if you don’t teach, I hope you check out this excellent blog!

Thank you for letting me share.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: 14pt;">Wanted: Anchor Chart for choosing the correct operation for problem-solving

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: 14pt;">As my students and I discuss problem-solving, I have been looking for the
“exact right” anchor chart as a visible reference for choosing the correct
operation. I’ve seen anchor charts that
address addition vs. subtraction or multiplication vs division but not one that
includes all four operations.
For just $1.50, you can buy the formatted letter and a blank frame to send home so parents can write an encouraging letter to their student. Whether you choose to print the letter, send home a blank frame to parents, or both, this is an easy, inexpensive way to let your students know that you believe in them and want them to succeed. Just print and put on student's desk on the morning of testing.
